Gabai

Putting down the phone to the last one on the list of men Gabai had to call, he rubbed at his temples. His head was throbbing after having to answer the same questions again and again.

Asher had disappeared into the club an hour earlier. Gabai wasn’t sure why, and he hoped it was just Asher letting him do what he had to do without feeling self-conscious about it. Being mated was very different from being a single Daddy bear. Several of the men had needed some extra reassurance, something Gabai didn’t have a problem giving out as a rule, but now he was mated all he wanted was to be with Asher.

But the calls had to be made. The littles needed to know they could ignore the email and that the club was safe for them again. What should’ve been a quick job took the rest of the morning and half the afternoon making contact with everyone. Gabai couldn’t blame Asher for leaving to find something else to do.

Sitting back in his chair, Gabai shut his eyes. Now he was done with the calls, he was back to picking up a sense of indefinable unease coming from Asher. They’d slept in that morning, and once more, Gabai had awoken to the pillow fort firmly pressed against his back. He’d enjoyed the press and weight against his back and had lain quietly, soaking up the feeling. Asher’s instinctive need for touch was becoming more apparent when he was asleep.

When Asher had finally woken, he’d rolled out of bed and gone straight to the bathroom silently. That wasn’t new, but there’d been something leaking through their link that Gabai was loath to push harder on to find what it was. He’d promised. His bear pointed out that his promises weren’t helpful when Asher clearly had something playing on his mind.

Remember, patience.

He’s upset about something. I don’t like it.

I don’t either. But intruding is not the answer, we promised.

Gabai pressed his thumbs to his temples and then rubbed in circles, keeping his eyes shut. Had they resolved one issue only to face another? He hoped not. He wanted some mate cuddles, he really did.

Gabai wanted to see his mate and projected his thoughts. Within seconds the door opened, and Asher appeared. The deep lines around his set mouth didn’t disappear when Gabai smiled at him.

“What’s up?” he asked as he sauntered to Gabai’s desk, the jeans and T-shirt fitting against all the hard muscle.

“I could ask you that.”

He sank into the chair opposite Gabai, one dark brow raised. “You prying?”

“No. You aren’t masking all the uneasiness you are feeling.”

The sigh was barely audible but nonetheless Gabai heard it. “Talk to me.”

Asher leaned his head back in his chair, staring at the ceiling. “Did you mean what you said about looking for someone else to take over the running of this place?”

“I did.”

The mask he was good at hiding behind revealed none of what Asher was thinking. “But you aren’t convinced you’ll find someone, are you?”

The sigh was all Gabai.
